California law requires most employers to provide sick leave and other types of paid and unpaid leave to most employees. An employer in California may be required to provide an employee extended unpaid sick leave in accordance with the California Family Rights Act, Family and Medical Leave Act, or other state and federal laws. Additionally, employers who choose to offer vacation must follow certain guidelines. California employers must be aware of the various rules, regulations and "best practices". While the federal law provides for the minimum benefits an employer must offer, California enhancements often take employers by surprise.
